Go Behind the Scenes at One of Sacramento’s Most Advanced Environmental Facilities
Sacramento, Calif. — The Sacramento Area Sewer District (SacSewer) is launching its 2026 EchoWater Resource Recovery Facility (EchoWater Facility) public tour season, inviting the community to experience a rare, behind-the-scenes look at the second-largest sewage treatment facility of its kind in the nation.
Free tours will be offered throughout the season, which runs from April through October. The tours give participants an up-close look at how sewage from homes and businesses across the Sacramento region is treated to produce clean water while protecting local rivers, wildlife, and public health.
Participants will gain a deeper understanding of how sewage treatment protects the Sacramento River watershed and surrounding ecosystems, while supporting a more sustainable future for the region. For many visitors, the experience is eye-opening—offering a rare opportunity to see the scale and complexity of the infrastructure that represents a major investment in protecting the future of the Sacramento region’s waterways and environment.
“Our public tours help connect the community with the critical infrastructure that quietly supports daily life across the Sacramento region,” said SacSewer Director of Communications Nicole Coleman. “By opening our doors, we hope residents gain a better understanding of how advanced treatment protects public health, the Sacramento River, and our region’s long-term water supply and environmental future.”
Located near Elk Grove, the EchoWater Facility treats an average of 118 million gallons of sewage each day for more than 1.6 million people in the Sacramento region.
